Adventures with Matthew!
Come and learn more about the Gospel of Matthew! The King and His Kingdom: Take a journey through the Gospel of Matthew with Jeff Cavins as your personal teacher and guide. Our two groups that are just finishing Jeff’s “Great Adventure” study have been incredibly impressed with the study and amazed at what they have learned. Consider joining us for this study and discover the riches and beauty hidden in the pages of this gospel. Explore deeply Matthew’s account of the Annunciation and Birth of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ miracles, and the Passion.
This is a 24 session study that will meet twice a month taking the summer off.
You have the option of attending a Monday night study or a Tuesday morning study. Tuesday mornings will begin February 20th and Monday nights will begin after Easter.
*Note: The “homework” for Matthew will be much less than that with the Great Adventure!
Click Here For A Registration Form! This study will help you to recognize how God’s plan unfolded through the Old Testament right into the New Testament. We will step through the major themes of the bible, see how events in the Old Testament came to fulfillment in Christ, and see how we can apply the bible readings to our everyday life. If you are not in need of a babystitter but are willing to help provide babysitting, please let me know! Maybe you have a teenager who would be willing to help!?! Even just once a month can be a tremendous help and would be greatly appreciated!!! Call Chris Wert at 757-6555 ext 210. Most importantly, I encourage you to still do the assigned reading. Nothing can replace your interaction with the Word of God. Secondly, do spend the time to answer the questions. For the Great Adventure Bible Study, you can come into the parish office to get a copy of the responses provided by Jeff Cavins and to watch the DVD for your missed session. Please plan to come in during regular business hours. We also have the study on audio CD's which can be checked out and taken home. Kathy Johnson, our gracious parish secretary, can help you!
The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible!
Developed by bible scholar Jeff Cavins, this study will give you an overview of the entire bible! Our goal will be to get a clearer picture of bible history – a clearer picture of the salvation history. God had a plan right from the beginning! www.thebibletimeline.com
Babysitting: Available for all studies!
Babysitting is offered for all of our bible studies. Please call in advance with the ages and number of children so we can plan adequate supervsion. We are excited to have you join us!
Will you miss a session?
If you know that you will be missing a session or if you have already missed a session, do not fear!
Bring Extra Paper!
Please bring along a personal notebook or put some loose leaf paper in your binder. Jeff Cavins presentation is filled with many things worthy of noting. Jot them down for future reference and reflection.
A Note on Reading the Catechism
I hope that you all have been able to secure a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church for use during our study. As I mentioned at our first session, the information I looked up for Session #2 was very interesting! I'll be pulling together some thoughts / tips on reading the catechism - it's a uniquely laid out book. Watch this spot and/or the bulletin for information to come! And if you get stuck or confused, please give me a call! Chris : ) 757-6555 ext 210.
Buying a Bible / Catechism / Other Materials
Don't forget that there is Scrip available for St. Patrick's Bookstore in the Northland Mall in Appleton. St. Patrick's can help you with the purchase of both a bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. By using Scrip to pay for your purchase, 6% goes back to the parish. Scrip is available for purchase weekdays in the school office, after school in the parish office, Wednesday evenings in the Faith Formation office and in the narthex after masses on the weekend.
Here's the information on the materials for the study (this information is also on a blue sheet in the front of your binder).
Suggested versions include the New Jerusalem Bible Study Version (ISBN 038S14261), the New American Bible Study Version (0195282779) or the Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition (ISBN 0898704901 hardcover, ISBN 089870491X paperback). Unfortunately the RSV does not have a study version. Please try to avoid the New Revised Standard Version, the Good News Bible, the Living Bible, the New World Translation, and the Life Applications Bible. If you have them, fine. However, I would not recommend purchasing them.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church
The CCC is a very valuable tool for study and will be frequently referred to during this study. The CCC is truly a “must have” for Catholics who are looking to grow in their understanding of our faith.
This is a suggested resource for this study. I can order this for you (ISBN 1932645179.)
As mentioned above, I would strongly recommend having extra paper for note taking during the video presentations.
